Fairy-Tale, Symbolic · People

My grandchild got a new teddybear from Santa. When she opened the gift wrapping paper, she put her little hand inside the package and said : “ear” (in Finnish of course). It was a teddybear’s ear that she felt first.

This situation was real, the teddybear looked her very tenderly, when they sat on sofa. Teddybears have some sweet magic.

Last photos at 20:00 against a dark sky. Photos do not show all the glittering. The ice was sparkling like thousands of diamonds.

Drawings of a boy and a girl

Firstly, I’m sorry about the bad quality of these photos, reflections of glass ruined them. I had to use Picasa to fix them, but couldn’t fix the girl’s eye. I cannot take new photos of these drawings, because they are not at my home anymore.

Wooden houses in North of Finland

This view is from North of Finland, where I was born. When I was a little girl, we had a home in this area by the sea. I have always been interested of architecture, especially of wooden houses and old residential areas, where the atmosphere is peaceful. Nowadays these kind of wooden houses are popular again and young people renovates them to a good condition. In 1970’s – 80’s many of this kind of areas were destroyed and concrete houses were built on those places instead. I think we need history around us among modern world.

Little girl watching TV 1983

I made a quick drawing of my daughter while she was watching children’s program in 1983. Usually people are not so interested to sit while I draw, so this was a rare moment. Nowadays I use a photo, if I draw portraits.

Searching my relatives who moved to USA and Canada

About 350 000 – 390 000 people moved to USA or Canada within years of 1880 – 1950 from Finland. There was jobs unlike here in Finland. Some immigrants came back few years later and some of them never came back, including few of my relatives. My relatives wrote letters to Finland within few years, but today nobody knows about their life or descendants in USA and Canada.

This family was one of them who landed harbor of New York in 1948.

My relatives in New York

If you live in USA and knew these people or their children and grandchildren, please contact me HERE

I’m also searching my grandfather, who’s photo I have never seen. He moved to Ironwood in 1913. City of Ironwood didn’t response to my email about this issue, but there has been many Finnish people at those times (25%). I found a website of ancestry.com and based on the information found from that website, my grandfather was alive in 1940 and he was a woodsman in Marquette, Michigan. ( IF that person was really the same.)

If anyone knows history of Finnish people in Marquette (1940 -), or in Ironwood  (1913 -), please contact me HERE

Also my other grandfather’s one brother moved to USA (Cooks Run in 1913) and another brother to Canada (Pincher in 1913) and they had families and children and grandchildren there. Brother who moved to Canada, had own bakery. Brother who moved to USA, was working in construction work. I have photos of them, if someone knows history of those places.
